When is Mothers Day 2022?
Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 8, 2022. Each year on the second Sunday of May, society comes together to celebrate mothers. From receiving cards filled with loving sentiments, heartfelt pictures and thoughtful poems to delicious desserts served at a tea party, Mother’s Day offers an abundance of ways to say I love you. But when did this holiday originate? Who decided upon the date? And what happened before Mother’s Day became such a staple tradition in America?
The origin story dates back centuries ago when observances were celebrated as early as 300 AD. Known then as Mothers’ Friendship Day or Festival for Good Children because friends and family would bond over prayers and celebration of their loved ones, children thought to be especially deserving received coins or small cakes symbolizing acceptance into heaven. However, there were also penalties imposed if kids were caught misbehaving – they could face public humiliation during a public service telling how bad they’ve been behaving these past days!
People often ask, When is Mother’s Day? The standard answer tends to be the third Sunday in May, but that’s not entirely accurate. Traditionally, Mother’s Day has been celebrated on the second Sunday in May, but that date was changed to the third Sunday of May in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson so it would fall close to his wife Ellen’s birthday.
Why Is Mothers Day Celebrated on the Second Sunday of May
Mother’s day is always celebrated on May 10th of every year. It’s a day for celebrating and honoring our mothers. On that special day, we recognize all moms and give them gifts to show our appreciation. Sometimes, we get together with family members and enjoy each other’s company. Other times, it’s just a quiet family holiday at home with mom doing what she likes best–cooking her favorite meal for her family.
The Origin of Mother’s Day
Although Mother’s Day has its roots in ancient history, it was officially declared a holiday by Woodrow Wilson, who signed a proclamation recognizing it on May 8, 1914. It wasn’t until 1914 that most Americans celebrated Mother’s Day, with efforts spearheaded by Anna Jarvis. By 1924 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed that Mother’s Day is observed as a national holiday.
The point of Mother’s Day is to honor mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, and other influential women. It is also a day to honor those who are still with us as well as those who have passed on. Many people visit graveyards or memorials on Mother’s Day, while others spend time with their family and loved ones.
About Mothers Day:
Many countries and cultures have designated days on which mothers are honored. These include Mother’s Day, held on various dates throughout May; Mother’s Eve in China; and Pink Sunday, which takes place annually on or around March 2nd.
In many ways, a mother’s influence—whether she works outside of her home or stays at home with her children—can extend throughout a lifetime. Mothers share their wisdom, as well as their love and support, which can go far beyond any single day or holiday. How are you honoring your mother today?
In modern times, women have received recognition on two separate occasions: during Mother’s Day celebrations and during Women’s History Month in March.
In Old Days Mothers Day Celebrated:
The first recorded celebration of Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1908, and lasted until 1910. The holiday was later revived by American author Anne Edward Arnold, who wrote a poem called A Mother’s a Little Woman and lobbied for U.S. President Woodrow Wilson to officially proclaim it a national holiday—which he did on May 9, 1914.
What’s a Parent Without a Child?
Why We Celebrate Mother’s Day: When we think of mothers, what do we think of? Do you imagine a young mom rocking her newborn baby, or perhaps a mom holding a toddler’s hand on their first day of school? Mothers’ lives are so often focused on making sure that their children have everything they need; however, it is time for society to see just how much these women sacrifice for those who depend on them.
Because of society’s tendency to focus on only mothers, it is easy for people who aren’t parents to forget how important and vital they are as well. That is why we celebrate Mother’s Day and honor all women who put their lives on hold for someone else. We recognize that these women give more than most ever have, or ever will. They deserve a day just for them.
Children Without Parents
American child welfare agencies estimate that roughly 350,000 children are living without a permanent home of their own. If you’re interested in finding out more about child adoption and how you can help, here’s a list of adoptions agencies. According to Child Welfare Information Gateway, as many as 20% of these kids age out of care when they turn 18 and no longer qualify for placement or support from state-funded agencies.
Honoring Parents and Family Members Who Are Gone
Since Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are family-oriented holidays, it only makes sense that a way of honoring them is by having your children honor you. This can be done in a few ways, but one thing that many parents do is ask their kids to write them letters or poems about how much they mean to them. These letters or poems can then be framed and hung up for display so that everyone else (and especially your children) will know what great parents you had.
